Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

Maybe someday I'll have something noteworthy to post in this section. I have only completed three 5ks and a 5 miler; all at an average pace somewhere in the 9:00-9:30min/mile range

Painter's Half 2010 - 2:03:54

Short-Term Running Goals:

Painter's Half Marathon - would like to keep an average pace of 9:00min/mile.

Painter's Half - Went over my goal and finished in 2:03:54 :( It was my first half though.  I had a great time and learned what I need to work on.

Salt Lake Half Marathon - would like to finish in under 2 hours.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Would like to complete a full marathon in the fall of 2010 and finally conquer the Herriman Hill...to be honest, there are several hills in Herriman I'd love to conquer, but that one for sure!

Personal:

I am a stay-at-home mother, married and have two young boys.

What perfect weather for a run! I really enjoyed this race. I was nervous about all of the hills since I'm used to running mostly on my treadmill. They really slowed me down, but I was happy that I only had to stop to walk once for about 30 seconds. I still need to work on increasing my speed!

that is a good time if your not used to the hills and these hills are mean!

Nice work!! I'm with Metcalf...those hills are BRUTAL! I started running like you did after my 3rd baby was born just over 2 years ago. A 1/2 is TOTALLY doable for you...I ran this race about the same time you did 2 years ago, before my first 1/2 in April the next spring. Winter training is hard, but if you're used to the TM (I like to call it a torture machine!) you'll do GREAT! Keep up the hard work and register and pay your money for SLC 1/2 in April and then you'll be committed enough to train through the winter (well, I'm a cheapskate, so paying the money always gets me up when I don't want to!).

Oh, and since I live out here too, I'd love to run with you! Send me a Private Message if you're interested and we'll get together sometime for a run!! Oh, and please don't think I run too fast...I don't really! I prefer a good 9-10mm!!!

I personally like the Riverton Half marathon. its closer to home and has not as many people, but there even bigger brutaler hills, but it only costs like 30 I really think you can do a half.

I agree with Metcalf. The Riverton half is closer, more 'personal' and the fee is a LOT less. However, the SLC 1/2 provides a really good big race environment for not a TON of money and travel. Lots of spectators and plenty of people to run with/around you and encourage you. Just depends if you want your first one big or little. Either way, you can totally do it!

Thanks for the advice you guys! Are both 1/2 marathons in the spring? I heard the Riverton 1/2 was really windy last year too. I'll have to weigh out my options and see which would be best. Thanks again!

yes the Riverton Half is the last Saturday in march (or it was last year it was March 28th and the SLC half is really close too if not the same week. The wind that morning was really annoying on the JRP so yes it was windy last year

Emily, that was probably me that you saw running into the cove, yes! My husband is bald and there are not too many bald runners out there, and we were there right around 9:45.

I am glad you had fun with the race. It is one I have always wanted to do, but I had to strictly stick with my NO RACE plan. As we ran back into our neighborhood, people were still crossing the road running the race (mostly walkers at that point). It is a tough race, there are some serious hills on that trail. SERIOUS HILLS!!!!!

NICE JOB!

SLC is 4/17 and I'm pretty sure Riverton is the last Sat in March. Both are great races! On the wind, yes it was NASTY windy that day last year, but then again when is it NOT windy in Riverton and on the JRP that time of year? :)

I like the Riverton course, but it does have a few tricky parts (HILLS). The thing is, we are good at hills because it is all we run out here so it is a good way to get a little ahead in a race! The Riverton half was very well organized and had real bathrooms and was nice and small----everyone knew your name, ya know? And my husband drove to three different places on the course to cheer me on with my kids and that was fun. Local is good. I did run most of the race by myself, passing very dew people and it was kind of lonely.

I LOVED the Salt Lake City Half. LOVED IT!!! It was amazingly fun to run with thousands of people and run into a packed finish line in the gateway. There were great crowds all along the way. Plus, with so many runners you really do feel less stress about being fast---there is always someone right with you, someone in front of you, someone behind you. Fun stuff.

So, I loved them both. Salt Lake is faster if you are looking for a quicker time, though. Juts all depends on what you want out of the race! Just do 'em both.
