Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

Maybe someday I'll have something noteworthy to post in this section. I have only completed three 5ks and a 5 miler; all at an average pace somewhere in the 9:00-9:30min/mile range

Painter's Half 2010 - 2:03:54

Short-Term Running Goals:

Painter's Half Marathon - would like to keep an average pace of 9:00min/mile.

Painter's Half - Went over my goal and finished in 2:03:54 :( It was my first half though.  I had a great time and learned what I need to work on.

Salt Lake Half Marathon - would like to finish in under 2 hours.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Would like to complete a full marathon in the fall of 2010 and finally conquer the Herriman Hill...to be honest, there are several hills in Herriman I'd love to conquer, but that one for sure!

Personal:

I am a stay-at-home mother, married and have two young boys.

4.5 TM miles this afternoon. First mile at 10:00 min/mile, miles 2-4.5 at a 9:13 min/mile. My knee felt pretty good.  I've got so much going on this week, so I hope that I can be prepared for Saturday.  Any advice on what I should do the rest of the week as well as race day? I really want to finish in under 2 hours, but I'm not sure how fast I should start out.  I looked at the elevation chart and it looks like the course is downhill miles 1-5 and from miles 5-10 there is a slight uphill and from miles 10-13 downhill.  If my knee feels good, I feel like I can maintain a 9:00 min/mile throughout.

Unless they changed the course, there is a pretty good climb at mile 12 (up state street). Other than that, I really do not remember any hill that was big enough to cause any kind of grief, just little bumps here and there! You have been training out here, so you will do great!

As long as that knee holds up, you have that time for sure!! I know you can do it, you are a strong runner and your legs are ready for this race. I know that I went out really fast since it was downhill. Many people will say not to do this, but I always do. My avg pace for the entire race was like 7:14, and I did the first 4 miles all around 7:05. So, not a ton faster, but I did take advantage of those DOWNS!

Do not worry about starting with the gun. There are so many people and the race is chipped, just start the race when the crowd thins a little. I think I was like 5 minutes behind the clock (in St George I was 7 behind the clock). It is not worth it to fight the crowds.

HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!!! I am excited to see how you do.

Oh, and I know it is Thursday already, so this is a bit late, but just take it easy today and Friday. Either do not run at all tomorrow, or do like 2-3 slow and easy miles to loosen up your legs.

I still laugh when I give advice, LIKE I KNOW!!!! But, that is what I would do.

She lies...she knows and tells all the rest of us what to do (because we ask and she knows and tells us!). I second her advice though. Make sure you do get some good sleep tonight, Friday will be a bust between emotions and birthday.

You will do a GREAT job, and as long as the knee doesn't bug too much you will easily finish in under 2 hours!! NO worries from me. Call me at the start so I can say hello and watch you fade into the distance :)
