Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

Maybe someday I'll have something noteworthy to post in this section. I have only completed three 5ks and a 5 miler; all at an average pace somewhere in the 9:00-9:30min/mile range

Painter's Half 2010 - 2:03:54

Short-Term Running Goals:

Painter's Half Marathon - would like to keep an average pace of 9:00min/mile.

Painter's Half - Went over my goal and finished in 2:03:54 :( It was my first half though.  I had a great time and learned what I need to work on.

Salt Lake Half Marathon - would like to finish in under 2 hours.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Would like to complete a full marathon in the fall of 2010 and finally conquer the Herriman Hill...to be honest, there are several hills in Herriman I'd love to conquer, but that one for sure!

Personal:

I am a stay-at-home mother, married and have two young boys.

Our family travelled down to my in-laws for the weekend and I was able to get out early and get a great run in. Unfortunately I didn't have a watch and was only going by the stopwatch on my Ipod, but I was able to run 6 miles in approx. 53 minutes.

I've decided that I enjoy running outside much better than on the TM, even if it's only 35 degrees. The run just goes by much faster and for some reason it feels easier to run faster. The only thing that stunk, literally, was the air. My husband's from a tiny town in central Utah and I kept thinking I was going to get sick from breathing in the smell of the livestock. Yuck!

Oh, a random question to the few who read my blog...any recommendations for which Garmin model I should ask for for Christmas?

Nice run! Great job getting a freezing run finished in a different place AND dealing with all the sights and smells :)

My recommendation would be the 305, simply because I've heard the 405 has a 'touch' like screen that isn't as easy to operate. However, the screen can easily get touched and move during a run. Either would be good though - it really comes down to a personal decision (and money!)

How are things going this week? Miss hearing from you.

I would opt for either the 205 or the 305, depending on your budget and/or your need for a heart rate monitor.

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:31:54 from 71.219.97.106

The 305 for sure! That darn 405 has way too many problems!!! Check Costco, they often have them. I got my first one online at Wal Mart (we own 2).

Nice job on the mileage outside (sorry about the stench, that gets to me in spots in Herriman as well, especially in the spring when all manure is defrosting). I agree with you 100%! I am so slow on the treadmill, especially at the start. Running outside is the way to go when you can! And nice speed, too!!

since you are both so passionate about the 305 maybe this is a good time to ask how you use the heartrate data in your training?

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:46:44 from 71.219.97.106

I don't. Who cares what my heart rate is?? Actually, I just think it is uncomfortable. My husband wore it a few times, but decided it meant nothing to him so he no longer wears it either.

I think Rachel just started using hers, she is trying to keep her heart rate below a certain level.

I wonder if anyone out there really uses the heart rate monitor for anything.

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:55:19 from 66.133.117.3

I've always thought it might be interesting to see where my heartrate is during races and such, but I can't imagine trying to speed up or slow down based on that data. And i don't think i'd wear the strap...

so with that in mind, the 205 is the way to go then right?

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:58:30 from 71.219.97.106

Point well taken, I just do not like the feel of the 205 on my arm, it bugs me. That is why I like the 305. My 305 actually did not come with the hear rate monitor (you used to have a choice) but Scott's did. Can you still buy the 205?

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:01:49 from 66.133.117.3

i believe that the 205 and the 305 are identical in size and shape, right? maybe you're thinking of the 201...

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:03:00 from 71.219.97.106

Cal, I am an idiot!! You are very right. The 205 is blue the 305 is red. Pick your team...

Go for the 205!!! But, again, can you still get them?

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:16:26 from 66.133.117.3

yeah they're still available.

of course i'm on my second one now and the audible beeps died not too long ago. i had purchased an extended warranty for it, but i'm not sure if its worth sending it away and not having use of it for several weeks just for the sound.

i wonder what the average lifespan is?

(my first 205 lasted about 18 months)

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:41:02 from 71.219.97.106

It all probably depends on how much you use it and how many times you drop it in the toilet! My 205 (the blue one) lasted about 16 months is all. I bought a used one from a friend (who won a 405 at Wasatch Running). He had it for about 6 months, and I have had it for about 6 months. Let's hope I can get another year out of it!!! Scott's will be two years old this Christmas, and it is still working GREAT!

Thank you everyone for your Garmin recommendations! I'm so glad I won't need to spend $400 to get a good one. I put my request in to "Santa" so hopefully I'll have one after Christmas!!!
