Goal Type:

Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

Maybe someday I'll have something noteworthy to post in this section. I have only completed three 5ks and a 5 miler; all at an average pace somewhere in the 9:00-9:30min/mile range

Painter's Half 2010 - 2:03:54

Short-Term Running Goals:

Painter's Half Marathon - would like to keep an average pace of 9:00min/mile.

Painter's Half - Went over my goal and finished in 2:03:54 :( It was my first half though.  I had a great time and learned what I need to work on.

Salt Lake Half Marathon - would like to finish in under 2 hours.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Would like to complete a full marathon in the fall of 2010 and finally conquer the Herriman Hill...to be honest, there are several hills in Herriman I'd love to conquer, but that one for sure!

Personal:

I am a stay-at-home mother, married and have two young boys.

Completed cross-training via P90X "Shoulders, Triceps, Arms" and "Ab-ripper" workouts. In total 1 hour and 15 minutes. Scheduled some speedwork training in the evening after my kids went to bed, but my 10 month old woke up screaming (he's cutting 4 teeth at once) after I was on the treadmill for only 5 minutes. Unfortnately, I was up with him for 2 hours and was unable to run. I will try again on Wednesday evening.

Completed cross-training using P90X "Back, Biceps" and "Ab-ripper" workouts.

Also focused on working on increasing my speed; I'm SLOW...my average is only 9:15-9:30min/mile. I ran for 2 miles at my average pace and then did 4x400 at 8:30 with 2 minute jogs in between. I was nervous I wouldn't be able to go that fast for more than 30 seconds, but it wasn't too bad! Anyone have suggestions on how I can better increase my speed?

Completed 4 miles on the treadmill. First 2 miles at 9:30 min/mile. Third mile at 8:35. Fourth mile at 9:45.

My goal was to go for 5 miles but I pushed it too hard during the 3rd mile. Still trying to work on my speed and hope to do better during my long run next Saturday.

Completed P90X "Chest, Shoulders, and Arms". Tried to focus on increasing my speed again so I jogged for 2 miles on treadmill at 9:30 min/mile and then did 4x400 meters at a 8:30 min/mile pace with a 2 minute jog in between. Cooled down with a 5 minute jog. I'm starting to feel better during my speed training. I hope to increase my average pace within the next couple of weeks.

From RAD on Sat, Oct 24, 2009 at 23:29:50 from 76.27.12.70

Nice work!! I'm with Metcalf...those hills are BRUTAL! I started running like you did after my 3rd baby was born just over 2 years ago. A 1/2 is TOTALLY doable for you...I ran this race about the same time you did 2 years ago, before my first 1/2 in April the next spring. Winter training is hard, but if you're used to the TM (I like to call it a torture machine!) you'll do GREAT! Keep up the hard work and register and pay your money for SLC 1/2 in April and then you'll be committed enough to train through the winter (well, I'm a cheapskate, so paying the money always gets me up when I don't want to!).

Oh, and since I live out here too, I'd love to run with you! Send me a Private Message if you're interested and we'll get together sometime for a run!! Oh, and please don't think I run too fast...I don't really! I prefer a good 9-10mm!!!

From MMetcalf on Sun, Oct 25, 2009 at 00:51:55 from 68.165.198.209

I personally like the Riverton Half marathon. its closer to home and has not as many people, but there even bigger brutaler hills, but it only costs like 30 I really think you can do a half.

From RAD on Sun, Oct 25, 2009 at 21:24:53 from 76.27.12.70

I agree with Metcalf. The Riverton half is closer, more 'personal' and the fee is a LOT less. However, the SLC 1/2 provides a really good big race environment for not a TON of money and travel. Lots of spectators and plenty of people to run with/around you and encourage you. Just depends if you want your first one big or little. Either way, you can totally do it!

From eblackham on Sun, Oct 25, 2009 at 22:46:22 from 71.219.134.218

Thanks for the advice you guys! Are both 1/2 marathons in the spring? I heard the Riverton 1/2 was really windy last year too. I'll have to weigh out my options and see which would be best. Thanks again!

From MMetcalf on Sun, Oct 25, 2009 at 23:21:16 from 68.165.198.209

yes the Riverton Half is the last Saturday in march (or it was last year it was March 28th and the SLC half is really close too if not the same week. The wind that morning was really annoying on the JRP so yes it was windy last year

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 11:16:38 from 71.219.97.106

Emily, that was probably me that you saw running into the cove, yes! My husband is bald and there are not too many bald runners out there, and we were there right around 9:45.

I am glad you had fun with the race. It is one I have always wanted to do, but I had to strictly stick with my NO RACE plan. As we ran back into our neighborhood, people were still crossing the road running the race (mostly walkers at that point). It is a tough race, there are some serious hills on that trail. SERIOUS HILLS!!!!!

NICE JOB!

From RAD on Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 19:45:30 from 76.27.12.70

SLC is 4/17 and I'm pretty sure Riverton is the last Sat in March. Both are great races! On the wind, yes it was NASTY windy that day last year, but then again when is it NOT windy in Riverton and on the JRP that time of year? :)

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 22:53:26 from 71.219.97.106

I like the Riverton course, but it does have a few tricky parts (HILLS). The thing is, we are good at hills because it is all we run out here so it is a good way to get a little ahead in a race! The Riverton half was very well organized and had real bathrooms and was nice and small----everyone knew your name, ya know? And my husband drove to three different places on the course to cheer me on with my kids and that was fun. Local is good. I did run most of the race by myself, passing very dew people and it was kind of lonely.

I LOVED the Salt Lake City Half. LOVED IT!!! It was amazingly fun to run with thousands of people and run into a packed finish line in the gateway. There were great crowds all along the way. Plus, with so many runners you really do feel less stress about being fast---there is always someone right with you, someone in front of you, someone behind you. Fun stuff.

So, I loved them both. Salt Lake is faster if you are looking for a quicker time, though. Juts all depends on what you want out of the race! Just do 'em both.

Woke up early, saw the snow and decided to hop on the treadmill instead. Since I've had a bad cold and relatively high fever for the last 2-3 days, today was my first day running since the race on Saturday. After running for about a mile, I thought I was going to throw up...(after doing so later today, I've surrendered to the fact that I have the flu) so I decided to walk for another 2 miles at an incline. Ah! I hate being sick!!! I'm going to try to take it easy until I know for sure I'm at 100%.

On a good note, I did decide to register for the Salt Lake 1/2 in April! That's it! I'm committed now!!! I guess getting sick at the beginning of my training is better than getting sick somewhere in the middle or the end. If I feel better later in the week, I hope to do a couple of short runs and take it easy. Hopefully, I can begin my training schedule on Monday. Thanks to everyone who has taken me under their wing and given me such great advice! I really appreciate it!

YEA!! I'm so excited for you. The race will be great! only 18 months ago SLC was my 1st half, and now I've run 3 marathons. You will do GREAT! Kelli and I are always around and are good for a run if you'd like...and as you've now learned there is always the BBK group to join if you're up for early morning torture :)

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 14:05:38 from 71.219.97.106

I am so sorry that you are feeling sick, I hope the little kids do not get it!!! Take good care of yourself, lysol everything, and do not worry about running until you are 100%----that is an order from me. Since I am way older, I can order....

I am glad you decided to do the SL half. I LOVED it!!! Rachel and I had a grand time and we know where secret bathrooms are before the race, even if it makes you late to the start. It is chipped, so who cares?? You will love the downhill at the beginning, the crowds throughout the race, and you will pass everyone on the hill at the end because Herriman will leave you well prepared for hills!

I know you usually do the treadmill, but if your husband is ever home on a Saturday, let me know and we can head out. I just hope it gets a little warmer and less windy.

I finally have something to report! I began my 1/2 marathon training schedule today. I felt like a slacker when it told me to only run 2 miles at an AP of 9:30, but I guess it was a good way to ease into things since I was sick last week and didn't run at all. I have not tried the plyometrics workout yet. In fact, I have watched them all but only done the abs and the Yoga. They look hard!!! I need to remember I have the DVD's on days i can not make it to the gym for whatever reason. I could certainly use the tough workouts!

The BBK's run all winter, rain or shine, no matter the temperature. Last year they had to get a little creative when we were hammered with snow, it was hard to find roads with shoulders to run on. I think for the most part they stuck to neighborhood areas. If it snows too much over night, I do not go. I do not want to be out driving at 5 am in the snow, on the unplowed roads! But, for the most part, I made it last year.

Nice job on the miles yesterday and p90X isn't for whimps - I'm afraid of it! The stronger muscles will really help with running, you'd be surprised!

From eblackham on Thu, Nov 05, 2009 at 23:52:44 from 71.219.157.135

I sure hope so, b/c it's tough stuff! I feel like P90X is helping me "muscularly" but I still feel week cardiovascularly. Some days I feel like my legs could go forever but my heart and lungs get tired a lot faster. Does it eventually get easier?

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 06, 2009 at 00:18:04 from 71.219.97.106

YES, it does!! Just stick with it! Some days you are just tired no matter what, but it seems the farther I run, the more in a rhythm, I get and the easier the breathing comes. I am sure you are fine----come hang out with us and here us breathe!!!

A lot of the ab ripper hurts my back, so you are way tougher than me!!!

Our family travelled down to my in-laws for the weekend and I was able to get out early and get a great run in. Unfortunately I didn't have a watch and was only going by the stopwatch on my Ipod, but I was able to run 6 miles in approx. 53 minutes.

I've decided that I enjoy running outside much better than on the TM, even if it's only 35 degrees. The run just goes by much faster and for some reason it feels easier to run faster. The only thing that stunk, literally, was the air. My husband's from a tiny town in central Utah and I kept thinking I was going to get sick from breathing in the smell of the livestock. Yuck!

Oh, a random question to the few who read my blog...any recommendations for which Garmin model I should ask for for Christmas?

Nice run! Great job getting a freezing run finished in a different place AND dealing with all the sights and smells :)

My recommendation would be the 305, simply because I've heard the 405 has a 'touch' like screen that isn't as easy to operate. However, the screen can easily get touched and move during a run. Either would be good though - it really comes down to a personal decision (and money!)

From RAD on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 16:26:52 from 76.27.12.70

How are things going this week? Miss hearing from you.

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 17:16:49 from 66.133.117.3

I would opt for either the 205 or the 305, depending on your budget and/or your need for a heart rate monitor.

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:31:54 from 71.219.97.106

The 305 for sure! That darn 405 has way too many problems!!! Check Costco, they often have them. I got my first one online at Wal Mart (we own 2).

Nice job on the mileage outside (sorry about the stench, that gets to me in spots in Herriman as well, especially in the spring when all manure is defrosting). I agree with you 100%! I am so slow on the treadmill, especially at the start. Running outside is the way to go when you can! And nice speed, too!!

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:35:19 from 66.133.117.3

since you are both so passionate about the 305 maybe this is a good time to ask how you use the heartrate data in your training?

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:46:44 from 71.219.97.106

I don't. Who cares what my heart rate is?? Actually, I just think it is uncomfortable. My husband wore it a few times, but decided it meant nothing to him so he no longer wears it either.

I think Rachel just started using hers, she is trying to keep her heart rate below a certain level.

I wonder if anyone out there really uses the heart rate monitor for anything.

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:55:19 from 66.133.117.3

I've always thought it might be interesting to see where my heartrate is during races and such, but I can't imagine trying to speed up or slow down based on that data. And i don't think i'd wear the strap...

so with that in mind, the 205 is the way to go then right?

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 18:58:30 from 71.219.97.106

Point well taken, I just do not like the feel of the 205 on my arm, it bugs me. That is why I like the 305. My 305 actually did not come with the hear rate monitor (you used to have a choice) but Scott's did. Can you still buy the 205?

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:01:49 from 66.133.117.3

i believe that the 205 and the 305 are identical in size and shape, right? maybe you're thinking of the 201...

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:03:00 from 71.219.97.106

Cal, I am an idiot!! You are very right. The 205 is blue the 305 is red. Pick your team...

Go for the 205!!! But, again, can you still get them?

From Cal on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:16:26 from 66.133.117.3

yeah they're still available.

of course i'm on my second one now and the audible beeps died not too long ago. i had purchased an extended warranty for it, but i'm not sure if its worth sending it away and not having use of it for several weeks just for the sound.

i wonder what the average lifespan is?

(my first 205 lasted about 18 months)

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 19:41:02 from 71.219.97.106

It all probably depends on how much you use it and how many times you drop it in the toilet! My 205 (the blue one) lasted about 16 months is all. I bought a used one from a friend (who won a 405 at Wasatch Running). He had it for about 6 months, and I have had it for about 6 months. Let's hope I can get another year out of it!!! Scott's will be two years old this Christmas, and it is still working GREAT!

Sorry, I haven't posted in a while. I promise, I have been working out though! I just haven't had the time to get on the computer.

Monday, my family was still visiting my in-laws in central Utah. So, I headed outside again. My training plan only had me run 2 miles, but I wanted to make it challenging to I chose a hilly course. Since I've done about 80% of my training on a TM at only a 1.0% incline, I've never realized just how hard hills are! There were times I felt like I was crawling up those hills! Kind of discouraging. I need to get outside more.

Overall it was fun though. No stinky cow smell this time :)

I woke up early before my kids so I could get my run in. Since my husband had to leave for work early, again I was confined to the TM. It was snowing outside, so I didn't complain to much :) However, after about 2.5 miles, my Ipod died and I found myself struggling to stay motivated. It's kind of sad that my own thoughts couldn't keep me occupied, but staring at the wall was getting kind of boring. So I quit at 3 miles, when I was supposed to run 6. I did complete a "Jillian Michaels" aerobics DVD afterwards, but I still felt like such a quitter!!! I think in general you should use your training plan as a guideline rather than a strict rule. So you have the flexibility to add miles here or decrease miles there depending on how you're feeling.

Just make sure you are smart about it and don't bump up your miles or intensity by too much or too quickly.

From Jon on Tue, Nov 17, 2009 at 23:38:01 from 75.169.155.153

If you feel good, then go ahead and increase it. But slowly. However, your mileage is low enough that you can do increases better than the 10% rule- if you only increase 10 mpw, it would take a while to get anywhere. I would start with maybe 4 miles/day, at least 5 days a week. Don't be afraid to back off if you get super sore.

P90X "Plyometrics" this morning.

Wanted to run a few miles on the TM this evening, but my 11 1/2 month old had other plans. He woke up screaming an hour after I put him down for the night. He's either cutting more teeth or has a sensitivity to cow's milk...I wish my husband was here more to help, but between school and work, this is how it's going to be for the next few years!

I met with the BBK's for the first time this morning. I was really nervous to run with them b/c I've never ran farther than 6 miles and I'm still pretty slow. The first 3 miles I felt pretty good but after a fairly long hill, I slowed way down and had to walk a few times. I definitely need more practice running hills! After the mile-long hill, I felt relatively good the rest of the way.

This running group is AMAZING and really inspiring. I hope to one day be able to run like they do! Thanks for inviting me again Kelli and I hope I didn't ruin your workout today too much by slowing you down. You probably didn't even break a sweat! I hope to work on getting a bit faster so I can keep up with everyone next time.

You did great!! I told you it took me a year to conquer that dang hill---you made it farther than I did the first time. And, I forgot to mention to you in ALL my talking that when I started running seriously (like more than two miles) I ran 9:30-10 minute miles. Then I joined the BBK's and they taught me to run faster. That was only two years ago! You are doing great!!!

If you ever want to run again, let me know. I enjoyed the run and having someone to talk to!! I am always here and can usually get someone to watch my kids, so just let me know!!! My husband even said you should come for a LONG Saturday run with us when you feel like it. He goes a little faster, he just circles back to get me. he sometimes gets 2-3 more miles than I do, but I like to take my long runs nice and easy most of the time!

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 20, 2009 at 02:55:57 from 71.219.71.229

I can run any time on Friday (my husband has the day off), Monday and Wednesday I can go in the afternoon when my daughter is at preschool, or any day I can go at 6 am or so (that is not too super early!) I go to the gym Monday-Thursday right now at 9 and fit in my running and weights (Tues/Thurs). So, I can always head out and run if I can get someone to watch Emma.

How is that for an answer?

From Cal on Fri, Nov 20, 2009 at 11:00:57 from 66.133.117.3

One of the nice things about running outdoors in Herriman is that you really have no choice but to run some hills. Eventually you get used to them and they won't seem that bad anymore. (And they make you that much stronger for races)

From RAD on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 02:05:29 from 76.27.12.70

I echo Cal! There is no place like Herriman to learn to run hills. It's a do or die (on the TM) out here! :)

I really wish I would have gotten some miles in on Saturday because now I am sick...AGAIN! I completely blame it on my main church responsibility of taking care of a class full of snotty-nosed toddlers every Sunday. I never used to get sick this often. I'm going to try to get some rest so I can still run with Kelli on Wednesday.

After having a bad sinus infection last week that drained into my lungs, it made it very difficult to breath. It's taken forever for the antibiotics to work, but over the weekend I finally started feeling a little bit better. I'm not feeling 100% this morning, but I had to do SOMETHING!

2 miles on the TM, AP 9:45. Speedwork 4x400 at AP of 7:55 w/2 min jogs in between. 1/2 mile recovery jog. I felt relatively good during my run. I'm glad I decided to stay inside though b/c I don't think the cold air would have been good. I probably would have woken up the entire neighborhood with my cough!

I realized, again, that my body is not used to hills and I need to run them more often so I'm not so intimidated by them! I hate what it does to my already slow pace. Oh well, we all have to start somewhere I guess.

You did fine up the hills! It really was a long and steady hill(up or down) the entire way. That is why I like to just run up HUGE hills and get it over with!

I think you are doing great. You have not run outside that much, yesterday was freezing (which is hard on the body and the longs and slows you down), and you have been sick. You really are doing GREAT!!!

It was only 15 degrees when I left my in-laws house, but after about a mile I was nice and warm. The first mile was all downhill and my pace was about 7:40. Miles 2-5 were relatively flat, with a few hills and I was able to keep an average pace of 8:45. Then the last mile was all uphill and my avg pace dropped to 9:30. I still don't like hills, but I'm getting a little bit better at running them. At least I didn't have to stop and walk!
