Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

Maybe someday I'll have something noteworthy to post in this section. I have only completed three 5ks and a 5 miler; all at an average pace somewhere in the 9:00-9:30min/mile range

Painter's Half 2010 - 2:03:54

Short-Term Running Goals:

Painter's Half Marathon - would like to keep an average pace of 9:00min/mile.

Painter's Half - Went over my goal and finished in 2:03:54 :( It was my first half though.  I had a great time and learned what I need to work on.

Salt Lake Half Marathon - would like to finish in under 2 hours.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Would like to complete a full marathon in the fall of 2010 and finally conquer the Herriman Hill...to be honest, there are several hills in Herriman I'd love to conquer, but that one for sure!

Personal:

I am a stay-at-home mother, married and have two young boys.

What a beautiful morning! My wonderful husband let me sleep in AND go for a 9 mile run while he watched our kids! I headed out around 9:30am and originally wanted to do 10 miles, but those darn hills kept slowing me down! I was exhausted by the time I got back to my neighborhood and just didn't have the energy to run all the way up a steep 3/4-mile hill to my house. Maybe next Saturday...

Here are my splits for today: AP 9:16

Mile 1: 7:44 (all downhill), Mile 2: 8:49, Mile 3: 8:35, Mile 4: 9:05, Mile 5: 9:37 (heading back uphill), Mile 6: 9:11, Mile 7: 9:35, Mile 8: 9:46 ("I think I can, I think I can"), Mile 9: 9:48.

Nice job this week!!! You are doing really well, sick kid and no sleep and all!! I think this half marathon is going to be really good (you are still in, right???) Maybe we should go out and run next Saturday??

Happy late Anniversary to you!!!

From Emily on Sat, Jan 02, 2010 at 22:56:13 from 71.219.138.107

I'm glad you're starting to feel better. Great run today too! We should have gotten together!

Connor had a bad ear infection and strep throat so we had A LOT of long nights here this week. He seems to be feeling better today though.

YES! I'm definitely on for the half marathon. My husband doesn't have to work next Saturday, so I should be able to go out and run. I'd like to go 10-12 miles so I have some confidence going into the race. What do you think?

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 03, 2010 at 13:11:03 from 71.219.96.112

Sounds good to me! Just pick a time and a route (or I have a few 10-12 mile routes) and let's go!

SO jealous! Wish I could join both of you! Oh, Emily...I think I drove past you as you were heading up Rose Canyon to home around 10:20 ish. I was driving to the stake center for baptisms. I almost stopped to see if it was you, but I was chicken :) Happy running! You're doing GREAT!!

4.25 miles on the TM this morning at a 9:15 min/mile pace. For whatever reason, I did not want to be on that machine this morning. Luckily I caught a re-run of "The Biggest Loser" on and that saved me.  I hope they always show those re-runs at 6:00am...that might actually get me out of bed :) How sad is that?!

SO, what time do you want to run Saturday? I am goo for whenever (the later the better).

Will there be one week, just one week, where my kids sleep all the way through the night?!!! I guess I should have expected it though. I took my 1 year old in to the doctor for his one year checkup and he got 4 shots...not a happy baby. And my 2 1/2 year old got his first round of the H1N1, so needless to say, it was a long night. Hopefully tonight will be better and I can get up at 5:30 to run!!!

getting used to running on no sleep takes practice :) Good luck with the kiddos, having small children AND taking good care of them isn't easy - especially when you have your own personal goals too. Hang in there, mom time comes soon -you'll get maybe 4-5 months then decide to have another :)

From Emily on Thu, Jan 07, 2010 at 22:52:37 from 71.219.130.225

I NEED to get used to running on no sleep if I'm going to improve at all! I just can't seem to get myself out of bed. I've even asked my husband to roll me out of bed when my alarm goes off, but he just sleeps through my alarm. I hate it b/c on those days that I don't get to run/exercise I end up hating myself all day. I think I've decided I'd rather be tired and like myself then well-rested and hate myself :)

It's just so hard sometimes b/c my kids are so little and therefore very demanding. My husband being gone almost 80 hrs/week doesn't make things any easier. No excuses though...I WILL reach my goals in 2010...no matter what.

Ok, sorry, that's a really long post. Thanks for letting me vent my frustration :)

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 00:56:13 from 71.219.89.82

WOWSA, your sleep hours look worse than mine by far!!! But, the answer to your question is, YES, that will happen when all of your kids are raised and out of the house. So, you just have a few years to go.

Hope you got some better rest last night and that the kids are happy campers again. Shots are no fun.

Mile 8 was where we did the little stop and look for a porta potty, I bet you just did not stop your watch! You did great, the last 6 miles are pretty much all uphill and even the little inclines are tough!

As soon as I got on the car, Scott said, "She can average 8:45 in a race, she'll be fine." So, see, you will do great. He can guess miles and paces without a garmin, so he can guess race paces, too!

Hope your date went well. We went and saw Leap Year this afternoon, it was cute.

Sorry, I forgot to post this question in my last comment. How do you properly treat blisters??? I don't have any under my toenails, just on the bottom of my feet and they hurt pretty badly. So, how do I treat blisters and how do I prevent them? I bought some running socks, but I think I might need to try a different brand...

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 02:13:37 from 174.23.217.47

Blisters are from frictions. First thing is to eliminate the source which can be from new shoes, old shoes, wet socks, etc. Body glide is a good lubricant. Some people swear by Wright socks. I just wear the ones that wick moisture.

Once blisters are formed, I'd treat it with aquaphor, or vaseline and cover it with bandaid. Hopefully the blister will shrink. Do NOT puncture or peel off the skin. Let it heal or scab up on its own.

I had a blister on my toe from wearing new shoes last week. It got irritated again on Sat. run. I stopped to treat it with chap stick (the only lubricant I had with me) and cover it up with a bandaid at mile 5 and was able to finish the 18 miler without any further damage.

At the SG marathon a huge blister formed on the ball of my foot. I stopped at the mile 5 aid station to put vaseline on it; but they had no bandaid. Vaseline itself did not help in the marathon. After the run I ice it and treated it as described. It healed up fine in a few days and I was able to run 54K 2 weeks later w/ no problem.

Hope this helps and your blister heals up fast. You know you're a runner when you have blisters and black toenails. They're like a badge of honor! :)

From Kelli on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 10:44:02 from 71.219.89.82

AND "surgically" pop them!!! I got a huge blister Saturday a lot lower on my foot than usual, so now I kind of feel your pain.

From Emily on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 16:41:18 from 71.219.130.225

Thanks for the advice! I will follow doctors' orders!

Kelli - by "surgically" do mean popping with a sterile needle?

My blister didn't really hurt too badly on Saturday, but I wasn't smart and wore high heels to church yesterday. What was I thinking?! I could barely walk yesterday afternoon! I will try your advice and hopefully I will be able to run tomorrow. Thanks again!

From Kelli on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 19:01:01 from 71.219.89.82

Surgically to me means with a sterile needle, but do not just pop it, SLIT it so that it can not just fill up again.

I got a nasty blister Saturday and it killed today while I ran. BUT it will not pop, what is up with that? I have been aggravating it all day so hopefully I can surgically pop it tonight.

I will forward you this weeks runs, I just realized I forgot to do that last week---SORRY! I am back on track and, unless we get a nasty snowstorm overnight, I will be there every Tuesday and Thursday if you want to join in. If there is any other day you want to head out, let me know. I would be happy to run again on Saturday as well.

Take care of those feet, no more high heels!

I went to put on my running shoes yesterday morning and wanted to cry b/c my blister hurt so badly! But after trying to stay off of it for a while yesterday, it felt much better today, so luckly I was able to run.

I had to work late last night so, I decided to sleep in this morning. Once I put my 1 year old down for a nap today, I tried to put on a movie for my 2 1/2 year old. Of course, he followed me instead of watching a movie. As soon as he followed me into our workout room, I thought that there was no way I was going to even get a mile in, but he was great! Thank goodness for resistance bands, push up bars, a stationary bike, and aerobics steps to entertain him :)

3.5 TM miles. Warm up for 5 minutes at 9:30. I alternated between a 7:30min/mile pace for 2 minutes and a 9:00min/mile pace for 2 minutes, until I reached 3.5 miles.

You are going to do great! There may be some uphills in the race, but there are just as many downhills that you can FLY down. I really think you are going to be FAST!

Did you want to run at all on Saturday?

I am so glad the blisters are doing better, i can not imagine blisters on that part of my foot. OUCH!

Yea for healed blisters! If you felt comfortable at an 8-8:30 on the TM you will FLY on race day. Race days are SO SO different from training runs...you will be completely blown away at how well you do!! I'll keep my prediction to myself so as not to scare you :) But...it's under 2 hours...

8.0 TM miles this evening. I was really nervous I wouldn't get my long run in today, but I was able to squeeze it in around 7:30pm. I'm just hoping that's not too late to keep me up all night! Kelli, I might be coming to your house for some children's Benadryl...

Ok, so I warmed up for 1/2 a mile at a 9:30 pace. The next 2 1/2 miles, my pace was 9:15, and the last 5 miles were at an 8:34 pace. No folks, that's not a typo! I really ran that fast for 5 straight miles!!! Then I cooled down for a 1/4 mile and had to hop off to read my kids a story before they went to bed.

NICE work!! I love that you're pushing yourself on the TM so soon! It took me a long time to do that, it's easier for me to push myself on the road than the TM!!

For this week, don't completely stop running, but drink, drink and drink some more! Seriously, you want to hydrate every muscle and tendon in your body - you will feel like you have to pee every hour, and that is good!! It will help you SO much during the race and with recovery. Also, keep your nutrition good. It's hard when you bump down your workouts to let your nutrition go too, but be diligent and eat well. It too will help during the race and with recovery. Take your miles down a notch...if your used to every day maybe do 3 Tu, We, Th then just do one on Friday and stretch or do yoga or the sort to get some good relaxation in. If your not used to EVERY day, just do 2 Tu and Th then same on Friday. Just enough Friday to warm up and loosen up - x-training is good that day too. If you feel like you're being deprived of running...you're doing it right! :)

From RAD on Tue, Jan 19, 2010 at 13:42:26 from 67.172.229.125

Oh, and that's my 2 cents - take it for what it's worth, definitely not scripture for running. Just what I would do in your position :) Kelli is better with tapering than I am.

3 miles, AP 9:27.  The slippery roads and being pelted in the face with freezing rain weren't too enjoyable, but running with someone is always better than running alone! I had to leave the group early to make it home in time for my husband to leave for the day so when I got home I hopped on the treadmill for an extra 3 miles at a 9:00min/mile pace.

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do the rest of the week.  I want to be ready, but I don't want to push it too hard.  Maybe 5 miles tomorrow, 4 Thursday, and 3 Friday???

Race: Painter's Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 02:03:00
Total Distance
13.10

I finished my very first half marathon!!!! Horray!!! I had such a blast and am so thankful to Kelli for pacing me. I wouldn't have been able to finish without her pushing me, especially the last few miles. She was WONDERFUL!!!

I didn't really know what to expect, being that this was my first half marathon.  I was nervous about pushing myself too hard in the beginning and thought if I did, I might not finish. Miles 1-9 were comfortably difficult, but around mile 10 my legs got really tired and I felt like they weighed 100 lbs a piece. I tried to pick them up and move faster, but after a few minutes of running faster, I felt like I was dragging again. It was SO frustrating!!! I realized after talking with Kelli that my legs just aren't used to going that far and aren't used to pushing at the end of my runs, so I am going to start working on that and incorporate progressive runs into my training for the Salt Lake half. I also need to run more hills, so I guess I'm lucky that my city and neighborhood are full of them! They're just SO intimidating!!!

I will post my splits later. My Garmin battery died right after the race and I don't have my charger with me.

I also had a near-death experience driving back home. Of course I checked the weather before I left because I hate driving in the snow and it said there wasn't any chance of snow and the roads were supposedly clear along 1-15. I left on Saturday around 5:00pm for my in-laws' house to pick up my kids. The roads were completely clear until I reached the 1-70 turn off/Cove Fort area on 1-15. As I was coming over a steep moutain pass, I drove through a few flurries into a full blown white-out in a matter of about 30 seconds. Of course I slowed down, but was going down hill and the road was suddenly completely covered in snow.  There didn't seem to be any tire tracks to even follow, so I had no idea where the road was (it was dark by now too). I started panicking and tapped my breaks to slow down, but I lost control of my car. I turned around in a few circles and then spun off a small cliff into a huge ditch and my car landed on it's nose (luckly it didn't roll). I thought for sure no one saw me slide off the road and that I would be stuck there for days. The ditch I fell into was so deep, you couldn't have seen me from the road. After realized I was okay and that I could move around I started freaking out b/c I couldn't find my cell phone. All the loose contents in my car were now down by my feet but it was so dark I couldn't see anything. Luckily someone started knocking on my window and said they called 911 and that help was on the way. I'm SO lucky someone saw me! We called a tow truck and crazy enough, only the front fender was damaged on the passenger side and I was able to drive to my in-laws. For my first car accident, that was very scary! It could have been much worse so I feel very lucky.  Only a few bumps and bruises and a stiff neck.

Sorry that was a long post! Oh, btw - does anyone know where to look for your official time for Painter's? I can't find race results anywhere. Thanks!!!

Emily! Holy cow! That was one scary near-death experience for you! I am SO GLAD you're okay. What a freaky accident!

We had so much fun! You're one lucky girl to have Kelli paced you. VERY AWESOME fist Half Marathon performance. You did SOOOO MUCH better than many first timers including me! Painter's is a hilly course, I have run it 4 times and still finds that the last few miles are daunting. I predict many PRs in your future.

Go to the St. George Marathon site, click on the runner series, click on Painter's half, there you should find the link to the 2010 result. It will take you to strider race site. I'll see if I can copy and paste that link to you here.

I'm SO glad everything turned out okay!! The race and the accident!

Seriously, you did an amazing job on the race and Kelli is right, I felt the same way my first half. After I started training with the BBK's all those hills, tempo runs and intervals keep those legs ready for a strong finish! You've got SO much ahead of you - SLC 1/2 will be AMAZING!!!

From Kelli on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 19:55:46 from 71.219.89.82

I am still freaking out over that car accident!!! SO SCARY, but I am so glad that you are okay and that your car was drivable and that someone saw you! MAN ALIVE, so very scary!

Your first half is now out of the way and you came out of it with a very respectable time!!! Most people can not finish that fast the first time around. You did great! Your breathing was great and the legs will come around, I promise!!!! I bet you can knock a substantial amount of time off for a great PR in Salt Lake (and it is a better course---my favorite!)

Thanks for letting me pace you. I hope to actually be good at it one of these days, I enjoy it more than I enjoy racing myself. It is hard to know how much and when to push someone, when to shut up, when to talk, when to run in front, in back, on the side....anyway, hopefully I did not annoy you too much! I am such a talker, I was flabbergasted that i was having a hard time coming up with things to talk about. I am glad you had your music to keep you company!

Hope you are home safe. have a good week!

First off -- I am so so so glad that you are okay. When I heard Kelli say: "You drove off a cliff????" I about passed out. Man oh man ... what an ordeal.

Secondly -- CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You did amazing!!!

Thirdly -- It was GREAT getting to know you. You are a rockstar!

Here's to many many many more fun races for you! :)

My car accident left me with a bad case of whip lash and a seat belt burn across my collar bone.  Tonight, I'm finally starting to feel like I can move my head from side to side without wanting to cry, so the plan is to start back at running tomorrow morning.  Wish me luck!

I'm signed up for the Salt Lake half and now the Wasatch Back and am considering doing the Riverton Half if I can talk my husband into it...running races is expensive! But SO fun!

I am glad to hear you are feeling better! Car accidents are the worst. Make sure to take care of your neck. I was in two car accidents 3 weeks apart and I still suffer from the whiplash at times. It is amazing how bad such a minor thing can hurt!!!

Great miles, and the hills will get easier! Your hill to your house is not a fun one, but you will have to do it every day so soon it will be a piece of cake!

5.5 miles on the TM tonight.

Mile 1: 10:00min/mile; Mile 2: 9:30; Mile 3: 9:00; Mile 4: 8:30; Mile 5: 8:00; Last .5 mile: 9:30 cooldown.

I really like this song I found on Itunes the other day, "Marchin On" by Timbaland featuring One Republic. It's got a good message and beat. Check it out if you get a minute.

I'm also preparing to begin another round of P90X on Monday. I'm actually planning on trying to follow the nutrition plan along with it this time. The last time I tried P90X, I followed the nutrition plan for about a week, but continued the workouts for about 7 weeks. I defnitely saw results, but I know if I was more careful about what I ate, I'd see a bigger difference. So, hopefully that doesn't mean I will pig out tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Oh, one more random thought/question. Does anyone know of any good running books they'd like to recommend? Thanks!

NICE pace and miles this week!

What kind of running books are you looking for? I have both editions of "Advanced Marathoning" by Pfitzinger/Douglas. I'm using its training schedule. "Brain Training For Runners" by Matt Fitzgerald has some good points on running forms and interesting theories on improving endurance and speed. "Run Less Run Faster" has good reference for Boston Qualifying pace training schedules. "Born to Run" is an interesting read. My son gave me "The Runner's Body" for Christmas, it's a nice reference book. I think you can check out these books in your library.

P90X "Chest & Back" and "Ab Ripper" workouts. I learned pretty quickly into each workout that I am not as strong as I once was. For many of the push up exercises I had to drop down to my knees half way through and I needed a chair for the pull-up/bar exercises. I guess that's what happens when you take over a month off from any strength training!

3.0 TM miles. 1/2 mile warm-up at 9:30. I alternated between 7:30min/mile for 1 minute and 9:00min/mile for 2 minutes until I reached 3 miles.

We went to Rodizio Grill, one of those Brazilian steakhouses. We had been to Tucano's before and really liked it, but I didn't think Rodizio's was that great. All of our meat was extremely salty and overcooked. Oh well! You live and you learn. At least we got a night out alone!

What a week it has been! I'm afraid I am going to have to take a big fat 0 for my miles this week. I hate putting 0 down for one day, let alone one whole week!

I've been running a low fever since Wednesday and have a bad head cold.  Aside from that, after putting Cody (my 14 month old) on a steroid b/c of croup and associated breathing problems on Monday, he broke out in hives on Wednesday.  We're not entirely sure if he had an allergic reaction to the steroid (supposedly not common) or if it was caused by something else. Poor thing had red itched hives all over his body.  Then this morning he woke up and I got him dressed only to discover that his hives had turned purple! He literally looked like he had a million little splotchy hickeys all over his body.  So back to the doctor again this afternoon (3rd time this week)!!! He had some blood work done and was able to rule out a few things the doctor thought could be causing it (all of which I can't remember/pronounce). He said sometimes after having a virus for a while, some kids will break out in hives, but that he had never seen anything like this. That's always nice to hear! So he sent us home and told me to just give him Benadryl. He also sad if it didn't clear up in a week or if he started to have trouble breathing, to bring him back in.

And that's just him. I'm not even sure what's wrong with me. I haven't had time to think about going to the doctor for myself, so if my fever gets any higher/doesn't go away, looks like I'll be taking a trip to the doctor too.

I feel like we've been sick SO much since we've moved here.  I really hope we have all built up enough antibodies so that we can actually enjoy next winter!

I hope you are all putting in some extra miles for me this week!!! I hope to be back on Monday!

Way to go on the half marathon. I ran it too. I will be running the SLC half as well. Good luck with your goal. Maybe we will "run" into each other. We have the same pace goals.

Do you find it hard to do P90X and train? I feel so heavy after a P90x workout and then try to run.

From Emily on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 16:49:39 from 71.219.137.145

That would be great to "run" into a fellow blogger at the SLC half! I thought that just about everyone I know on here is going to Boston that weekend.

Yes, running after P90X is difficult sometimes. I enjoy running somewhat more than lifting weights, but I find that I get flabby/flabbier if I don't do both. It's getting pretty time consuming so hopefully I'll be able to keep up with both!

What is your workout routine like? I see that you are training for a marathon in June. That's amazing! I still don't know if that is a goal I could reach...maybe one day when I'm done having babies :)

From calliej on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 22:33:03 from 97.126.145.218

I never thought I would run a marathon, but I did it and wanted to do better. So I ran a second one and in the middle of training I found out I was prego. I went for it only to have to bail at mile 19. Not good! I'm only running the same marathon to finish it and then I don't think I will do it again. Too much training.

I have just started my training so my miles are low. I think I am going to put P90X on hold until i'm done with training and do not so involved weights. I have the flabby problem too. Those babies take a lot out of us.

The girls I ran with this morning are running 12 miles at like a 9:30 pace, but unless they go early, I might not have time to go that far.

Are you running tomorrow?! How have you been feeling lately?

From RAD on Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 15:50:46 from 67.172.229.125

The info is on Smooth's page and you can go as far/short as you want. The initial part is 5 out and back 10 total. I think they are starting at 8AM which may be too late for you. Smooth usually runs a 9:30 or so, so I don't think you'll feel too slow.

I won't be running, just tried walking again today :( I was thinking I might show up and bike, but honestly, I'd be cold and feel crazy, so I'll probably do elliptical at 6, spin at 7 then a little more ellip afterward. Maybe I'll stop by on my way home from spin if I have time.

yeah...your hill is BRUTAL! Hard to hit a negative split on the way home.

SO glad you're feeling better and I hope you have no sickness as well (kids AND mom!) I'm sure you'll PR SLC 1/2, because the course is enough downhill that you couldn't help but PR even if you hadn't improved (which isn't true!).

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 23:29:39 from 71.219.89.82

I have been a bad blogger and not checked up on you for a bit! I am sorry that illness once again hit your family and that it got you this time!!! Glad you are feeling better though.

I love this time of year when it starts to warm up, spring and fall are the best for nice afternoon running. Herriman has SO many runners, it is fun to see them and it does not matter what time of day you go----they are everywhere. And I have to agree, runners are so friendly.

Don't stress over a PR, stay healthy and it is in the bag for you! You will be so much better trained and have more miles under your belt. PLUS, it is just plain a better race! I know it will be a HUGE PR!

So glad you are feeling better! Just found out that I have a stress fracture. Don't think I will be running SLC half. I am so frustrated. If you know anyone who wants to run it they can have my number.

Good luck with your training! :)

I'm having trouble staying motivated this week (as you can see from my low miles this week).  I just feel like I have so much on my plate! Looking at my schedule I realized that I'm going to have to wake up at 5:00am at least 4 days a week to get my training in.  I did it this morning and I feel so much better now that I've got my miles in for the day, I just wish I could be more consistent. Any advice?

Are you still super busy with taxes and stuff? Could you get a little nap in every day maybe? I struggle with too many early mornings as well, but you do eventually get used to it---especially if you can get in 1-2 days of good sleep!

YOU ARE DO AMAZING!!!! Your speeds are great! Especially since you say you are not feeling motivated.

It is hard, but just do it and you will be SO glad. Consistency is the key! Good luck!

I know, I need to just get into the habit of it so that I can be more consistent. I just have to decide that I'd rather reach my running goals than get a full nights sleep every night. I'm not going to look back on my life and say, "wow, I'm sure glad I got a lot of sleep in my 20's" I want to be proud of the races I ran! Thanks ladies!!!

Do you have anyone who could run with you that early? It helps to have someone who is meeting you - keeps motivation high :) I'd offer to do it with you, but I've got single parent duty this week :( Next week however, I could meet you at the gym and we could TM together?

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 14:48:39 from 71.219.89.82

HEY YOU!!! It was good to see you this morning out running! I wish I had known that you were able to head out later today, we would have invited you along!! Today was crazy! We saw SO many runners, it was almost crowded in spots.

Hope your run went well!

From Emily on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 16:38:21 from 71.219.137.145

RAD - I completely agree about having running buddies! There are a few women in my neighborhood that run at 6:00am so when I'm able to get out later than 5:00am (I can't believe I'm using later and 6:00am in the same sentence!) I try to go with them. They are pretty consistent too, so it's nice to depend on that.

I WISH I could go to your gym! My husband is in school right now so it's not in the budget unfortunately, but the bsmt apt we rent has an exercise room that I have access to, so that's nice. We really do need to get together sometime though!

Kelli - It was great seeing you too this morning. I thought for sure you were going on another one of your 18-26 milers or else I would have called you! I agree about it being crowded today. I probably passed 20-30 runners. Must be everyone trying to get fit for summer!

9.0 miles around Herriman this morning.  AP 9:18.

I felt just a little bit faster on the hills I came across and was able to recover more quickly.  After running a hill, it usually takes me a while to speed up again, but today my legs seemed a bit stronger! Hooray! Maybe one day I won't dip down into the 10:00's when I'm running a hill!  It totally ruins my average pace goals, but oh well. It is what it is!

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 18:16:57 from 71.219.89.82

Oh, and that is a great average pace when you throw in the hills!!!! Salt Lake is mostly down (just that hill at the end) so you are gonna be great!

Ditto to BOTH of Kelli's comments. When I was first running, my sister said "there HAS to be somewhere where you can run and there are no hills!" but, I searched and there isn't :( It makes you stronger and makes those downhill races a walk in the park! Keep up your hard work, it's paying off like crazy!!

Oh, about the gym...if you feign interest I think they will give you a one week free pass. If I'm close to home like that I can leave for an hour in the wee hours and meet you on a TM if you'd like. I wish I could outdoor run with you :(

6.0 TM miles this morning. Miles 1 and 6 at 9:30; miles 2, 3, 4, and 5 varied between 8:15 and 8:35.

I got interrupted at mile 2.5 by my 2 year old.  I thought by getting up at 5:00am that I would guarantee no interruptions! He started screaming at me over the roar of the treadmill "STOP RUNNING MOM!!!" He told me he had gone pee pee in his pull-up and needed me to change him. So after a 15 minute ordeal of changing him and singing him a few songs to get back to sleep I had to go help my other child who got woken up b/c of Connor's screaming episode.

My husband was in the middle of studying for a test he had this morning, but was nice enough to come help put the baby back to sleep while I finished on the TM.

I'm just happy to have gotten my miles in and was glad to have kept a fast pace (for me) for 4 straight miles! Wahoo!

I'm planning on running outside tomorrow morning, so unless I get hit by a car, I won't be having any interruptions!

I wasn't brave enough to run outside in the snow/rain so I ran 7.0 on the TM at an AP of 8:35.  I kept getting side cramps in the first few miles so I started out a little slower than I'd like, but I think I made up for it toward the end.  My knees really started to hurt around mile 5 so hopefully resting on Sunday will prevent any injury from occurring.

I'm excited for better weather this week!!!

I also need some advice on which races to run.  I've been invited to run the Wasatch Back with some women in my neighborhood, but I will be in a car with no one I know.  I've heard from a lot of people that it's a lot of fun, but I'm not sure if it will be worth it.  Also, if I run Wasatch Back, that will max out my racing budget for the whole year.  I may be able to do one other 5k or something, depending on how much it is.  I heard that South Jordan is holding a half marathon in July, I think it's the first year they are doing it, and I really would like to do that one. Any suggestions????

NICE pace and miles!

I've only run WBR once last year. I have to say that it's only fun if you KNOW the other runners in your van. To me, it's like a slumber party with some running thrown in. I think it's way too expensive. The no sleep and can't eat was the hardest part. That's my 2 cents.

take care of the pain! Don't let it get out of hand - it's easier to get better now than let it 'fester' (speaking from experience here!). Where is the pain? Is it in your knee or more on the outside of your knee?

I'm glad it wasn't too bad today and that you were able to get through the miles at a good pace as well!

From Emily on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 16:06:29 from 71.219.137.145

It's on the outside of my left knee. It really bothered me on Monday when I tried to go faster than an 8:00min pace, but when I took it easy yesterday it wasn't nearly as bad.

I'm really not sure where to go from here...whether I should rest or keep pushing through the pain and if I should keep ice on it, etc. Any advice?

From RAD on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 16:46:32 from 67.172.229.125

unfortunately...yes. If its on the outside of your knee (especially the left, because we typically run on the left side of the road) it may be ITBS. I sometimes feel like a resident expert on the crud! But, when I get the pain I feel like I still know nothing!! Anyway, search it on the internet and see if you think it could be ITBS. If it sounds right to you shoot me a Personal message and I can give you some good stretches etc to help!

4.0 TM miles this afternoon, AP 9:30.  Sometimes I feel like I am going so slow at this pace, but this is the pace my training schedule said to run.  I am sure I will feel differently tomorrow.  I'm supposed to run 5 miles at a 8:13 pace.  I'm nervous I won't be able to since I took it easy last week and I'm worried my knee won't cooperate. I guess we'll see!

My knee bothered me a little bit today so I made sure I stretched for 5 minutes before and after my run.  Everything I read about preventing injuries suggests cross training, strength training, and stretching.  I'm not sure what my next race will be after the SL half. I don't think I'm doing Wasatch Back anymore b/c I can't find anyone to stay with my kids. Plus if I run it, I won't have any money left to run any other races the rest of the year.  Maybe I'll run a couple 5Ks or a 10K instead and try to get faster.  Either way, I know that I need to focus more on improving my overall strength so that I don't have any more injuries.

Stinky-ness that the ITB bugged again, but I hope the stretching helped.

Good luck on the run tomorrow - those tempo runs are always crazy! You'll appreciate the slow pace tomorrow :)

I'd also go with skipping Wasatch Back, it's a fun run - but not really a 'race'. Take the $ and do some fun local 10K's and maybe one 1/2 in there somewhere. A LOT better than one 24 hr run.

My brother came down to visit from Logan so we ran together this morning around Herriman. He's also running the SL half and told me before our run that he thought he'd be able to run at about a 10:30 pace.  I wasn't opposed b/c I didn't know what would happen with my knee.  Our first 5-6 miles were in the low to mid 9:00min pace.  He did great! At around mile 9 my knee really started to hurt so we decided to walk/jog the rest of the way back.  Our goal was to run 10 miles, so overall we both felt pretty good.

I've been taking Ibuprofen on and off all weekend for my knee and have tried to stretch as much as I can. I think I might have to finish out my training on the darn treadmill b/c yesterday's run was not fun.  I hope it won't bother me too much during the race in a few weeks!

GREAT run! I'm SO sorry your ITB was buggin' you - ugghh!! I feel your pain and cringe when I read it was bothering you!! Do you have a foam roller or a swim noodle? If you roll on it on your side (from the hip ALL the way down to the knee) it will really help as well! It is a little awkward and crazy to do, but it will help roll out that tightness. ESPECIALLY after a run where it bothers you.

Good luck! I am also running SLC 1/2 and if you'd like I'd be happy to drive/carpool with you. Let me know! You will have to wait for me to finish at the end though :)

We travelled to my in-laws for Easter weekend and since they don't have a treadmill, I ran outside.  I was nervous about my knee so I made sure to try to run on the opposite side of the road and keep a really slow and steady pace.  My average pace ended up being 9:34 on a relatively flat course.

My knee seemed to hurt the worst on each uphill climb I encountered, but wasn't too bad going down, so maybe I'll survive the SL half.  I'm really discouraged about my knee.  I am still hoping for a sub 2 hour time and hope I can pull it off.

I found out that my grandpa passed away this morning.  He was almost 90 years old and has had it pretty rough the past few years, so it's kind of a bittersweet thing.  My parents are flying in from Virginia for the funeral. 4.5 TM miles this afternoon. First mile at 10:00 min/mile, miles 2-4.5 at a 9:13 min/mile. My knee felt pretty good.  I've got so much going on this week, so I hope that I can be prepared for Saturday.  Any advice on what I should do the rest of the week as well as race day? I really want to finish in under 2 hours, but I'm not sure how fast I should start out.  I looked at the elevation chart and it looks like the course is downhill miles 1-5 and from miles 5-10 there is a slight uphill and from miles 10-13 downhill.  If my knee feels good, I feel like I can maintain a 9:00 min/mile throughout.

Unless they changed the course, there is a pretty good climb at mile 12 (up state street). Other than that, I really do not remember any hill that was big enough to cause any kind of grief, just little bumps here and there! You have been training out here, so you will do great!

As long as that knee holds up, you have that time for sure!! I know you can do it, you are a strong runner and your legs are ready for this race. I know that I went out really fast since it was downhill. Many people will say not to do this, but I always do. My avg pace for the entire race was like 7:14, and I did the first 4 miles all around 7:05. So, not a ton faster, but I did take advantage of those DOWNS!

Do not worry about starting with the gun. There are so many people and the race is chipped, just start the race when the crowd thins a little. I think I was like 5 minutes behind the clock (in St George I was 7 behind the clock). It is not worth it to fight the crowds.

HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!!! I am excited to see how you do.

Oh, and I know it is Thursday already, so this is a bit late, but just take it easy today and Friday. Either do not run at all tomorrow, or do like 2-3 slow and easy miles to loosen up your legs.

I still laugh when I give advice, LIKE I KNOW!!!! But, that is what I would do.

She lies...she knows and tells all the rest of us what to do (because we ask and she knows and tells us!). I second her advice though. Make sure you do get some good sleep tonight, Friday will be a bust between emotions and birthday.

You will do a GREAT job, and as long as the knee doesn't bug too much you will easily finish in under 2 hours!! NO worries from me. Call me at the start so I can say hello and watch you fade into the distance :)

What a fun race! My brother and I rode downtown early this morning together and made sure we got to the starting line with about 10 minutes to spare.  There were SO many runners! We decided to stretch for a bit and line up toward the back.  I don't think we crossed the starting line until about 8 or 9 minutes after the clock started, but it was nice to start off with a slower, less crowded group.  I had to weave in and out of people for the first couple of miles to maintain my pace.  I was feeling GREAT the first 5-6 miles and didn't need to stop for a drink until mile 6.  My ITB wasn't bothering me too badly and I maintained between a 8:40 - 8:55 min/mile for those first 6 miles.  I was SO pumped!

I felt my legs starting to get pretty tired around mile 9 and started to feel myself slow down.  I still kept my pace below a 9:05 min/mile though.  I was on my way to a sub 2 hour PR!!! Then around 9.5 miles something happened to my knee and I felt horrible shooting pain from my hip to the side of my left knee. DANG ITB!!! I felt like cursing every step the last 3.5 miles.  I almost cried as I watched my average pace keep dropping.  I even had to walk a few times up the hill on State Street toward the end because the pain was SO unbearable.  So I'm kind of discouraged with my time and my knee and am trying to just be proud of myself for finishing.  I don't even think my Garmin time is completely accurate b/c I accidently hit the stop button with my arm while I was reaching to change a song on my Ipod.  I think I caught it soon after I heard it beep, but who knows.

All in all, I'm trying to focus on those first 9 miles and how much fun I had.  It was such a beautiful day and a fun course.  It would be great if I could get my ITB feeling better and run it again next year to see how I do.

Stink, stink stinky stink! I totally understand your pain!! Really! I do! I've NEVER run that race w/out ITB pain after mile 10, it's hard with the weaving through crowds and downhill - it really aggravates it! You do have the conditioning to make a 1:55 or less though! You were hitting AWESOME paces - you did GREAT!

I think you're on the right track to look at those first 9 miles and know that THAT was your race! Stretch, roll, ice - repeat. Look at the fact that 2:05 is still a rockin' time! I wish I had a miracle cure for that ITB, trust me - I really wish I did!! Well, you could get pregnant - those hormones that relax all your hip tendons for childbirth really seem to help :) I, for ONCE, didn't have pain today.

I'm not saying it's worth it - it's just the only thing I've found to work so far! Keep up your excellent work and maybe even see a PT about the ITB, then pass on any new advice :)

You did a GREAT job in the race, and pushing through those last 4 miles makes you TOUGH AS NAILS girl!! When the ITB settles down, you'll have to let me try to keep up with you on a run.

Oh, dang Emily!!! I am so sorry to hear about your IT band, Those bands are a curse, I tell you. I know some people struggle with them all the time, but I was able to somehow get mine under control. I hope you are more like me than those other people (RACHEL!!!!) who seem to be plagued with problems. There are a lot of stretches you can do, Rachel is a pro at them. You should have her come over and show you!!!

I think those first miles indicate you would have had a great race, so I agree----focus on that. You are a great runner and things will get better, I promise! You know you were there, but not ever day is perfect and sometimes those bad days hit us on a race day and it STINKS!!! Just keep at it, you will get that race PR where you want it to be!!!

I sooo understand the IT issue. It forced me to drop out of Boston last year. Here's what helped me. 1. Stop running. If you don't, you'll be out of running longer than if you simply stop now. 2. Get the inflammation down. Fill a Dixie Cup with water, freeze it, tear off the top part of the paper and apply the ice directly to your knee for 8 minutes. Keep the ice moving, but apply directly to the skin. You knee will go numb and it's awful at first, but do this 2-3 times a day and it will get the inflammation down. I moved the ice in a circular motion throughout the area. 3. Stretch. There is some debate about this, but it usually doesn't hurt the situation. There are lots of stretches out there on the internet. Foam rolling works, too. I bought a marathon stick and have my husband roll my IT band out each night for a deeper massage. 4. Strengthen glutes and hips. Most knee problems stem from weak glutes and hips.

I hope this helps. I even stopped indoor cycling for 5 weeks to beat this thing, but it worked. The more you "push through" the pain, the more inflammation will set in and the more scar tissue your body will lay down. The more scar tissue, the less range of motion which means more inflammation, etc. It's a vicious cycle. The good news is, it will get better if you treat it right. PT can help find exercises and stretches. They can also help guide you back into running. This is common, but treatable, and if it's any consolation, when I got back into running, I was MUCH faster. It was after all of this that I started setting PR, winning age group awards, and yes, I made it to Boston this year. Good luck!

I am such a horrible blogger! I am so sorry. I have been so busy since the SL half that I haven't even had time to check my e-mail! I work part time for my dad, doing his billing/accounting and he hired two new consultants and hasn't hired the clerical support to do their billing so I've been up until about midnight every night and have had to wake up at 5 am to keep up with it all! I'm exhausted! He should be hiring someone this week, so hopefully that means I can get back to exercising.

Thank you all for such wonderful advice on my IT band issues. I'm honestly really nervous to start running again. I've been stretching and doing some strength training exercises since the race and hope that by taking a couple of weeks off, it will heal. I was in SO much pain after the race! I couldn't walk normally for about 4 days. It hurt to simply bend my leg to walk. I probably looked so silly swinging my straight leg in front of my body every time I took a step! Oh well. Thanks again for all of your help and concern. I will let you know when I start running again. I'm hoping by the end of this week. Any advice? Obviously I'll start slow and stretch before and after, but what should I do if I start to feel pain again?

From Kelli on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 10:08:22 from 71.219.75.178

Avoid running downhill, that is for sure!!!! Just run nice and slow, walk if it hurts, take it easy. I was able to clear my ITband pain up within 2 months or so, I just had to really take it easy and STRETCH!

From kccowart on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 15:16:05 from 71.195.242.175

I remember being so nervous to start running again, so when you do, start with short runs. My first run was 2 minutes long! The biggest piece of advice I have is to ice the area every day, even when you're not running. It does wonders for inflammation. Stretching and strengthening are important, too, after the inflammation is down. My doctor told me to run and stop BEFORE pain hits. Hard to do, but if you feel your leg tightening up, stop. This is no fun, but the sooner you take care of it, the shorter your recovery time will be. I agree with the downhill comment. They're hard on IT bands. I do fine on them now, but avoid them early on when you get back to running. This IS treatable. Ice, stretch, strengthen. Good luck and let me know how you do! I have so much empathy for what you're feeling now!

I finally have something to post today! It's not very exciting, but it's something!

2.0 TM miles.  I felt my knee start to tighten after a 1/4 mile! Ahhh!  I slowed my pace down from 10:00min/mile to 10:15min/mile.  That didn't seem to help so I walked a 1/4 mile and jogged a 1/4 mile until I reached 2 miles.  So now I'm icing and stretching.  I think I'm going to work more on doing more leg strengthening exercises and aerobics videos this week and try to run again on Saturday to see my IT band is any better.  Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

"Shoulders & Arms" and "Ab Ripper X" workouts.  My 3 year old was so funny and stood there making sure I completed all my reps.  He counted all the way to ten and then said, "eleventeen." Pretty sure I didn't teach him THAT number!

I have not been good at getting on the blog, sorry! Life is crazy, I blog my run and leave for the most part!

ANYWAY, I will do better to check in on you! How is the p90x going little lady??? Are you following the entire plan, like the daily workouts and the eating? Or are you just doing it on your own?

Jillian seriously scares me, but I here her DVD's are great! I have the BOB yoga DVD if you want to borrow it, it is so tough!!! It is so not the nice happy stretchy yoga, it is more like torture yoga!

From Emily on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 16:33:41 from 71.219.155.12

No, I'm not doing the P90X diet plan. I share the DVDs with my landlord and I'm pretty sure she lost the diet book that comes with the DVDs. I don't even know what the diet includes! I want to do the full 90 day workout and start running at day 30. I figure my injury happened when I stopped doing any strength training and only ran, so hopefully with the combination of the two I'll stay injury free!

I AM happy to report that while not working out for 5 weeks, I didn't gain any weight. I didn't feel as strong though and I'm sure I started looking flabby.

I honestly was planning on doing P90X this morning, but had to do a Jillian DVD b/c I couldn't find the P90X DVDs. Since my landlord got divorced, she's been moving a lot of stuff around. That DVD was the next best thing I had that morning. I forgot how good her workouts are! I'm still sore from it!

I was supposed to do P90X Plyometrics this morning, but I couldn't find the DVD.  My landlord and I share the P90X dvds and since it was 5:30 in the morning, I'm sure she wouldn't appreciate me waking her up to ask her.  So I did P90X "Chest & Shoulders" and "Ab Ripper X" workouts instead. I really feel like the ab ripper exercises are helping to strengthen my hip muscles as well, so hopefully doing that 3 times per week will help my IT band issues.

I later found out that the Plyometics DVD was in my landlords broken DVD player that we can't figure out how to open.  I have a kind of love-hate relationship with Plyo so I'm kind of happy/sad I don't have access to it right now.

I feel a lot better doing some sort of exercise, even though I'm not running but I MISS RUNNING SO BADLY! I promise I push myself as hard as I possible while lifting weights but I really miss dripping in sweat while running.  My friend has a buddy pass to Lifetime she wants to give me, so maybe I can get a spin class or two in to help maintain my sanity.  I may even go over to the gym in Herriman to see if they'll give me a trial pass or something.

I have the same cold my kids had last week and woke up in the middle of the night with a fever. So rather than get up early and get my workout in, I took my kids on a walk in the double stroller for about 1.5 miles around our hilly neighborhood this afternoon.  Pushing a 35 pound kid and a 25 pound baby up a hill is a great workout! I still feel pretty crummy today, so I'm going to try to get a nap in while my kids are napping. Hopefully I will feel better tomorrow!

Ok, so my mom gave me some $ for my birthday to get some new running shoes.  I went down to the SL Running Company this morning to see what they had.  I took in my old shoes and after doing their little video assessment of me running on the treadmill, the salesman said I had been running in the wrong shoes for the last 8 months!

I went to Wasatch Running to get my shoes before and they told me I overpronated and needed a shoe with a lot of stability.  The guy at SL Running Co. said I only overpronated slightly and that running in a shoe with too much support could have been making my foot roll out too much and putting too much stress on my IT band.  He did say it was unlikely that shoes cause IT band problems, but he said it wouldn't have helped if I was already having issues.  So...hopefully after recovering for so long and with some new shoes, I won't have any more pain.  Now THAT would be the best birthday present ever!!!

I don't have a race scheduled.  Does anyone know of  a good race more toward the end of the summer? I want to schedule something so I can get back into running, but I don't want to push myself too much too fast.   Any ideas?

It originally was supposed to be a half-marathon and I'm kinda bugged they changed it. I was really hoping for a sub 2:00 hour time. I do hope to run the race at a 9:00 avg pace though w/out any ITB pain. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for checking in on me! I hope you're enjoying your summer.

Summer is BUSY, but that is good. Glad to hear things are going well and you are feeling good. Best of luck on the upcoming race, I am sure you will do great.

Emily! I'm so glad you are doing well. I run through the cove a few times a week and often think about how much I'd love to pick you up and run with you! Maybe I'll run into you sometime.

I'm glad the ITB has settled down for you and that you are on your way to an 8 mile race. I'm sure you'll do great! Try to blog about it when you get back if you remember. Miss you!

THINKING OF YOU and hoping you guys are okay!!!!

Ok, this is depressing.  After taking several months off of running, I am now officially out of shape. I could only run 2 miles this morning before I caught a cramp so bad I had to turn around and come home.  SO frustrating! I'm now back at the beginning stage of running that I was this time last year but with expectations way to high for myself.  Not a good place to be.  I just need to be patient with myself and keep at it.  Hopefully my speed/endurance will come back faster than I think it will.

Another slow 2.25 miles this morning at AP of 10:12.  I did try and not focus on how out of shape I am this morning and just enjoy being outside by myself with no screaming children around me.  The stars were beautiful this morning! I love this time of year when the air is so crisp and cool but not so cold that I can't feel my face.  I did get a little nervous at the sound of howling coyotes up the hill from my house.  If that doesn't get me motivated to work on my speed, I don't know what will!

3.0 TM miles this evening.  Mile 1 warmup at 6.0.  Miles 2 and 3 at 6.5.  I felt pretty good overall.  No IT pain!

2.5 Miles.  AP 9:48.  I learned this morning to try and focus on my breathing while running down the .75 mile hill in my neighborhood.  I've gotten a cramp every time I run down that thing and I think it's because I'm not focusing on my breathing like I should.

3.5 TM miles this afternoon.  Warm-up 1st mile at 6.0.  Miles 2-3 at 6.5.  Last .5 cool down at 6.0.  I'm a lot slower than I'd like to be but I'm getting there! And hey, no IT pain either!

4 TM miles early this morning.  1 mile warmup at 6.0.  Miles 2 and 3 at 7.0 - this was easier than I thought it would be.  The first .5 miles was kind of rough and I was tempted to stop several times but once I got used to the pace, I really enjoyed myself! Hooray for no IT pain!

HOORAY FOR NO IT PAIN!!! Now, this post was a month ago, how are things going? I need to do better at checking in with everyone. Having a job has really affected my blogging!!!

How IS life Emily? I've been up in the cove running a few times and thought about you. Hope things are well.

Hey! Things are going great! I'm such a horrible blogger. I didn't blog for a while b/c my speed and distances were quite embarrasing. I've just fallen out of the habit and need to get back into it! I'm only running about 18-25 miles per week but I'm happy to say that I have had no IT pain since late last Spring. I'm hoping to run the Riverton Half this year and I'm signed up for Ragnar - Wasatch Back. How are things with you?! How's that sweet little baby of yours doing? Thanks so much for posting! I'll have to do better with blogging now that I know someone might actually read it :) Take care!

Hey Emily! Glad to hear you're doing great! Hurray for painfree running and some fun races to look forward to!

From RAD on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 00:22:03 from 67.172.229.125

Life is good for me! Baby doesn't like to sleep much at night without being nursed back to sleep, but I'm getting used to it :)

The Riverton 1/2 will be a great race and Ragnar is always fun. I will have to bail on Ragnar again this year too, I will just be finishing up nursing baby and won't be able to leave that long. 2012 is ON for Ragnar though :)

I'm glad you got over the IT pain, it can be a bugger! Did you ever finish p90x? My hubby is on his last week this week. He is SO sick of it, but keeps doing the workouts.

Are you still running early morning? If you are we should get together some time and run. I need excuses to get up and out in the AM!

From Emily on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 01:10:12 from 71.219.120.20

Sorry I'm so slow to respond! Life has been crazy...sick kids, the beginning of tax season = too much work, sinus infection...NOT FUN!

I did finish P90X. I wanted to do another round of it, but after doing it twice, I kind of want something different. I don't know if I have time for much more than running though. I am still running early, but usually on the TM. My husband is doing a rotation right now that requires him to leave every morning at 6:30, even Saturday :( I don't know how early you could leave b/c of your baby, but if I ever get a morning with my husband here to watch the kids, I'll let you know so we can get together.

I hope you get some sleep soon. My kids were both that way, couldn't go back to sleep without being nursed. SO exhausting! Is he 7 months old now?
